The growing Victorian population of East- the-Water's first place of worship was a prefabricated 'iron church' built in 1881. It was replaced by St Peter's, designed by R T Hookway and consecrated by the Bishop of Exeter on 28 June 1890.

My happiest memories of childhood are the weeks spent with my aunt who lived in Weare Giffard. Coming from London I felt I had arrived in paradise. My aunt, lived in a bungalow called 'Wayside' near the Halfpenny bridge. From her garden, we used to watch the otters playing on the riverbank.
