In 1959 the narrow High Street still had 19th-century buildings on both sides, but an overspill housing programme was already under way and traffic was increasing. It was decided to demolish numerous properties and to rebuild them further back, thus widening the road and providing parking.

I remember the shops on the left hand side being built in 1962 they were built by fred pickering builder of wednesfield I worked on their construction as a 15 yr old after leaving school
as a child growing up in cross street which was just off new st i remember there being a laundry opposite my home and sid perks coal yard was this the bag wash??
My memory does not relate to one specific year but to many. My grandparents lived in Hall Street, they ran a haulage company, S E Foster, and wedding car firm, the only one in the village at that time. Their names were Edwin and Nell and they gave me childhood memories which I will cherish forever.
