More about this scene
Hesba Stretton is a little-known writer who was born in New Street, to the left of the timber framed building at the far end of the square. Her real name was Sarah Smith, and she wrote novels with a strong religious theme. One novel, 'Jessica's First Prayer', was published in 1866 and sold one and a half million copies. She was also a founder member of what is now the NSPCC.
