The first Welwyn Stores was founded in 1921 at Guessens road, but it closed in July 1939 when the new, larger stores was opened in the centre of the new town. Welwyn Stores had branches in many towns in Hertfordshire, and formed an important part of the Garden City Company. In 1947, Welwyn Stores contributed £1,560,000 to the company's gross income.

My father managed WH Smiths in Howardsgate before the war. He later returned to WGC to manage the Books and Stationary Departments at Welwyn Stores between 1956 and 1979 when he retired. He will be celebrating his 100th birthday on Monday!
