Olympic Games & After
A Memory of Wembley.
My father, who worked for Philips Electrical (Mullard Amplifier Division) was the Sound Engineer at both the Wembley Stadium and Pool during the entire Olympic Games of 1948. He had to work very long hours not only during the events but also during the daily rehearsals of ceremonies. I went to one of the last events, with my grandparents, which was equestrian. After the Games finished, my father continued as the Sound Engineer and my Sister, (and sometimes my cousin) and I went to all the ice shows at the pool. We also went to see the Harlem Globetrotters every year when they came to the UK. They were good times. I went to watch Speedway at the Stadium but my view of this event involved climbing a very high ladder to one of the spotlight cabins, way above the stands. Quite a frightening experience for a small boy! I have very many happy memories of those times, I still have programmes from the 'Games' and some Rugby matches and of course many, many autographs of the stars. It was a particularly sad day for me when the Stadium Towers were demolished but I am very glad that the 'Pool' has had a preservation order put on it, so much of our heritage has been lost in the name of progress.

My Dad worked at Wembley Stadium from 1947 until 1979 as an electrician, and enabled me to go to many, many events both there and the Empire Pool.
I as born in Preston Road, and went to St. Gabriel's junior School, followed by Wembley College in Chaplin Road. We moved to Sudbury Court Drive, Harrow in 1953, when I joined Harrow County School.
I am fascinated with all these postings, as I am writing my memories from 1942 onwards.
Like you I have been researching the family history. The more you look, the more you learn. My Daughter is also very keen to learn .
I have lived in Sussex for the past 35years, but love to research all my old haunts. Writing your memoirs brings it all into sharp focus.
Where are you now?
