The round tower of the parish church can be seen in the distance. West Dereham was the birthplace of Hubert Walter, who was a friend and fellow-crusader of Richard the Lionheart; he later became Archbishop of Canterbury. He founded an abbey in his home village, parts of which survive in Abbey Farm.
