Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

More about this scene

West Horndon is a planned village dating only from the 1940s. Before that, it had been a sparsely-inhabited parish, whose medieval church had collapsed by the early 18th century. The railway station—formerly called East Horndon—stood in the middle of nowhere when it was first built in 1886; the Railway Hotel was previously a coaching inn. West Horndon is now a compact settlement with a small industrial estate, and some good footpaths leading to Bulphan Fen.

When West Was East
My grandparents James & Emily Lee lived at 16 Station road from about 1938 to 1946, it was called East Horndon then. Part of that time my mother and I lived with them, most of the war years. My grandfather and my mother worked at Rotary Hoes when it made munitions during the war, my grand farther remained working there until he was laid off at the age of 83. The Flying Fortress Crash
I remember, during the war, two flying fortresses crashed in Hordon. One came down near the Half Way House, the other one in a field in Chiderditch behind the pub. They were returning from a bombing raid on Germany. There was about fifty of them when all of a sudden these two collided - the wing of one chopped the tail section off the one next to it. Treasured Memories
My family moved to West Horndon from Millwall during the war, my nan and grandad already lived at 13 cadogan and we lived at 9, later to be changed to 29. I lived in the village for twenty four years, got married at St Nicolas Church, Ingrave. We had two girls while living at Cadogan Ave. I went to school at Little Warley and then to Brentwood Secondary Modern. My memories are fantastic of the village ...see more

West Horndon Essex
I lived in Cadogan Avenue with my Nan & Grandad Mizen, Mum and Dad until we moved to Hutton when I was about 4. My Nan lived there until she died in 2001, God bless her. I have so many happy childhood memories with her in the garden. My Mum Barbara Anne worked at the foundry, I think it was called Rotary Hoes. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
