The Wright Family Thames Street

A Memory of Weybridge.

My mum was then known as Angela Wright and was one of 8 children. Her mum was called Olive and they lived at 32 Thames Street in Weybridge. My mum went to St James Secondary Modern in 1958. Does anyone remember them? She would love to hear how her former school friends are. Some names she remembers are Carol Ugle
Angela Baxter
Carol Smith
Victor Beale
Roy Benstead
John Alderman
Ivan Higgs

Many thanks, Amanda

Hello I was at St James in the late 50’s and early 60’s and was in school with all the people you have named with exception of Vic Beale who I think was a bit older but didn’t his family own the Stores in Thames Street
Good to hear all of the names from the old days
We lived at Broadwater Farm

Hi Amanda,

I was a little older than Angela and Victors class but Doreen Wright and David Beale were in my class. They left St James in the summer of 1957 and I left at Christmas 1957.
Others in the class that lived in Thames Street were Eric Hopkins and Dave Ayling. Unfortunately, Dave Ayling died in 1971 of cancer. Very sad, David was a lovely lad. I would often go into David Beals Dads shop, in Thames street and buy a penny ice lolly, sweets etc. on the way down to swimming in the Desborough Cut at the swimming huts. Sometime Jackie Charnler would be there diving of the bridge into the cut, beautiful to watch, but way above my abilities.
Also because I was slow at reading my mother sent me to a tutor, retired school teacher who's house was just above the Beale Shop on the same side.

Kind regards

Roy

Hi Roy my mum loved hearing your message thank you. She’s going to share it with my Auntie Doreen (Wright) who lives round the corner from my mum. Doreen will be 80 this year and I know she’ll love this trip down memory lane. All the best, Amanda
Hi Amanda,

I remember both Doreen Wright and Doreen Welland who was her close friend, they always seemed to be together. Doreen Welland's younger brother took my brother to Weybridge hospital when he cut the indide of his knee on the diamond link fence that ran down Thames Street to the Ship Inn. My brother had 15 stiches in his knee and I was always very thankful to I think it was David Welland. It was so sad, that I beleive that he unfortunately died as a very young man.

I have assemblied the 1953 to 57 class which may bring back some more memories.

Roland was a founding member of theatre group Cartoon Archetypical Slogan Theatre (CAST), formed in 1965. Prior to this he had taken a stage management course at Bristol Old Vic, where he met his future wife Claire Burnley. They moved to London and joined the Unity Theatre as stage managers, which was controlled by the Communist Party of Great Britain. They formed a theatre group with Ray Levine and David Hatton. Roland was then expelled from Unity Theatre for dissident reasons. The group was later joined by Red Saunders and became CAST. Roland began teaching at the Working Men’s College in Camden Town, and the rest of the group became the class. After leaving they produced a series of short left-wing plays with the recurring character of Muggins. Notable early works included Mr Oligarchy’s Circus (1966) and a collaboration with John Arden and Margaretta D’Arcy Harold Muggins Is a Martyr (1968). The original group split in 1971/2 and those that left formed Kartoon Klowns. The play Sam the Man (1975-77), which explored the Labour Party since 1945, was a success and instrumental in them gaining an Arts Council grant in 1976. Another key work in this period was the Confessions of a Socialist (1978). This was later developed into a solo show, Full Confessions of a Socialist, which was taken to America. In 1980 Roland won an Off-Broadway Theatre Award (aka an OBIE) for the play. The Arts Council grant ended in 1985, which marked diversion of CAST away from producing their own plays. However, they had been producing CAST New Variety nights since the early 1980s. With the end of the Arts Council grant, these became CAST’s main focus, and they took over the Hackney Empire. They supported and nurtured comedians who became key players in the alternative comedy movement. Roland remained at the Empire until 2005. He is still active with CAST in the production of comedy nights.
