More about this scene
Little has changed over the years since the 1950s. Then as now, one could dawdle on the way to the beach and look at the gift shops or stop for a cuppa, or even have some oysters – an oyster stall is just visible (centre left). Dorans the photographers sold their pictures here, and further on, in the middle of Pier Road, there was the Magpie Café, still today nationally famous for fish and chips. A long queue stretches outside the café during the holiday season.
