More about this scene
Open to both men and women, Whitby became one of the most influential monasteries in the Celtic world. It was noted for its learning, and turned out a number of 7th-century scholars, including Bosa, Oftor and John, as well as Caedmon, the acknowledged father of the sacred song. After being destroyed by the Danes in 867, Whitby was not refounded until 1078, when the Benedictines began building their abbey.
