The Cross Keys (left) dates from the 17th century, though it replaced an earlier structure. Until the 19th century, there was a brewery here too. Just beyond it stood the village lock-up (built 1828). In the 1990s, Black and White Notley were joined by a new, purpose-built sibling, Great Notley.

In 1939 my brother and school friends were evacuated to the village and were taken in by local families; my first being Miss Lane who had the big house opposite the Crosskeys, however four boys were too much for her and we were split up.
