More about this scene
Wickersley is four miles east of Rotherham. Its people once earned their livings making grind stones, around 5000 a year in the 1820s, in varying diameters from one to six feet. Business must have been good, because there was enough money around in 1834 for the church to be given a new nave. The chancel dates from 1886, and the stained glass is also vintage 1880s.
