More about this scene

A familiar sight for those heading to or from Eastbourne along the A27 as it passes north of the South Downs escarpment is the Long Man of Wilmington, a gigantic chalk figure of a man holding 250ft-long rods in each hand. The outline is now set out in white blocks installed in 1969. Although the first written reference to him is in the 18th century, his date is uncertain - some think he was created in the Bronze Age. This is a suitably enigmatic note upon which to end this second tour from Hailsham.
