More about this scene
The Chapel abounds with monuments of beauty and dignity. They include the Princess Charlotte Memorial, 1817, by Matthew Cotes Wyatt, which combines the sensational with the chaste. This snow- white scene is acted by life-size figures. The Princess is lies dead on a ledge, covered entirely by a heavy sheet; only the fingers of one hand hang down from under it. Mourning women to left and right are completely hidden by mantles. Above, the Princess ascends to heaven, one breast bare; she is accompanied by two angels, one holding the stillborn baby, the other with crossed arms. The total effects are very strong, and the whiteness and lack of emotion on the faces are acceptable - as indeed is the scene created by the large and striking Prince Imperial's tomb pictured overleaf.
