More about this scene
This famous local monument, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, was erected in 1881 to commemorate Thomas Clarkson, an active anti-slavery campaigner. In 1996 his efforts were given national recognition when a memorial plaque was placed in Westminster Abbey. The background buildings have hardly changed, except that the Belfast Shop now replaces Fell's wireless shop overlooking the monument (extreme left).
