Share your own memories of Wishaw and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

When I was a boy, does anyone remember the Cocozza's who had the cafe in Craigneuk? The old man used to have a cycle with an attachment to carry ice-cream for sale in the Craigneuk area. I seem to remember that Mario Lanza the famous singer was a relation of theirs. Can anyone shed any light on this? Seems an outside shot, but you can only ask!
Hello, I wonder if anyone could help me? I'm looking to trace a Jim or James Murray who played guitar locally in the Wishaw area around about 1971/72? Apparently, a kind of Billy Connolly lookalike with long hair. He was a guitarist who played the local pubs; Caledonian bar and maybe the Portofino in Waterloo that's now the Pink Turban. He may have lived in the Smith Avenue area of Gowkthrapple. Any info would be helpful, no matter how little. Thanks .
13 Hazeldean Crescent - I remember it well.
I played with the Midlanders Combo, it was a bit later in their career though. When I joined its line up was Geordie Quinton (my cousin) vocals, Wullie Mitchell - lead guitar, Tam Fraser - guitar, John McMononagle - bass, and me on drums. We played every weekend and during the week, I was only about 15 years old at the time so it was very exciting for me playing away in Northern England and the borders. ...see more

Most of my friends at Wishaw Academy in the 1950's lived in the prefabs; Gordon "carrots" Mcallister, Johnny Davidson, Billy Ffyfe, Jim Glover, I have forgot all the other names. We all went on to Wishaw Central School, we spotted trains at Wishaw South and Central stations, explored the area ie. Wishaw Glen Road, the old gatehouse, mine and watermill - all now gone. All the things we liked also gone, ...see more
My uncle Tom had the ice-cream van that went round the prefabs. He was married to Famme Marsella - Marsella was name on side of ice-cream van and her parents had a shop quite near Netherton Cross where they made the icecream. Great cones and big wafers known as 'blackmen' not tryin to be rascist but that was what they called them. Great ice-cream with raspberry or tallies blood as it was known at that time!
I remember the prefabs too, we stayed at 23 Stenton Quadrant. Our name was Hill, I had three brothers; Robert, Harry and John. I remember playing red light, kick the can and other games on the roundabout, which at Guy Fawkes was transformed as we all went looking for stuff to put on the bonfire, parents attended as well. I went to Wishaw public and then to the central and going in the mornings to Peter Dures shop ...see more
I remember 60 years ago a character known locally as 'Daw Barr'; he used to go around collectng beer bottles in a sack carried over his shoulder which at that time you could take back and exchange for money, or in Daws case more beer from the pubs! I believe he slept rough and I also remember a couple taking up residence in the field just down and left from Wishaw Train Station. I think it was a made up ...see more
