Wolverley In The Fifties
A Memory of Wolverley.
In the Fifties A family called the Robinsons owned Wolverley Court. They had three children, Michael who had a sports car, Judy who played the violin and Ian. They ran a youth club for the village children and also held the village fate.
They were lovely people who did a lot for the community.
The village often flooded but people then didnt have fitted kitchens or carpets. rugs and furniture were taken upstairs.
One vicar had his own rowing boat so that he could deliver supplies to stranded villagers.
We had a baker, a post office ,a grocer, a news agent come sweet shop and a butcher Mr O'Gorman. I was friends with his daughter Kathleen and when we went to her house at the back of the shop we had to pass through the backyard where the slaughtered animals were hung up and the blood drained to a central drain.
My father was Mr Chapman and he was caretaker/gardener at Buryhall part of Sebright School.
The field between the road by the church and the lower road by the river was called the Pea field and and had a kissing gate at the bottom.
