The church is surrounded by the parkland of Woolverstone Hall. The exterior looks unusual because the church was rebuilt three times by the Berners family between 1830 and 1890. The porch stands against the nave of 1864, the chancel of which is black flint with stone courses. In 1888-90 a new nave and chancel were built over the north aisle of 1830, which left the earlier church as the new south aisle and chapel.

From 1954 until 1958 The Royal Harwich Yacht Club at Woolverston was where our Thames Sailing Barge was moored, and I spent my holidays from boarding school sailing, swimming, climbing trees or running free in the parkland which surrounded the Club, and cycling over to see my friends.
