More about this scene
The almshouses stand at the junction of Friar Street and Union Street on a site previously occupied by the city gaol. In 1869 the gaol was sold to William Laslett, a solicitor, Liberal MP and benefactor, who adapted it to accommodate elderly married couples of limited means. In 1910 the gaol was demolished and replaced with this mock-Tudor building.
