More about this scene
The Racecourse occupies part of Pitchcroft, which is where the Romans dumped the slag from their iron workings. The slag was removed in the 17th century but Pitchcroft remained undeveloped, acting as a venue for fairs, circuses, military camps and musters. Horse racing first took place in 1718 and the Grandstand was built in 1823.
