More about this scene
The 13th-century church with its 15th-century tower stands on the north side of the square. At the foot of the tower, a vaulted passageway extends right through it, enabling processions to take place around the west end of the church without leaving consecrated ground. This would otherwise have been impossible, since the adjoining highway abuts the building. Inside this feature is a stone that may have once held a sanctuary ring, which granted safety to any alleged criminals who grasped it.
