More about this scene
When they see it from the road or the nearby railway, travellers are puzzled by this church with towers at both ends. The church was part of a Benedictine abbey, originally a priory, founded by William d'Abini, Earl of Arundel in 1107. The ruin on the south-east of the church was the abbey's chapter house. Never fully completed, the west tower is 142ft 6ins high; the north porch has a groined roof with well-carved bosses. The nave has nine bays and a large triforium. Inside there are elaborate wood and stone carvings, a hammer-beam roof and a modern altar-screen, which is a war memorial.
