An exhibition of fine art was held in the grounds of Bootham Park Hospital in 1866. It attracted thousands of people, so it was decided that a permanent building for further exhibitions should be erected. This building, in what became known as Exhibition Square, opened in 1879; it is now the York City Art Gallery.
