MY MEMORIES OF CROMER
Born in 1947 in Suffield Park, as was, Cottage Hospital on Overstrand Road. Lived in Links Avenue until 1959. My memories are vast. I went to school in the centre of Cromer which is now converted to senior citizens accommodation. I have been back to Cromer two or three times, the first time after 30 years. My husband and I took a nostalgic trip to my old home and the area where I played as a child. My parents divorced in 1958 and my mother remarried in 1959 and we moved to Chester. My father, "Tim" Ernest Sylvester Bartram was a trumpet player in a band after the war and also worked as a signalman. He had been a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force when my mother met him and he had been a POW in Germany for some time after being the only one left alive after his Halifax crashed in Germany. I have his Log Book, makes interesting reading.
I remember my grandparents Ernest (senior) and Emma. I remember also where they lived in Central Road and we also went to see if the house was still there, which it is although the railway sidings at the back of the house is now a Supermarket. My grandfather used to take me through a little gate in his back garden onto the sidings and he used to tell me about the railways and its history. I was only a little girl so my memories are vague. Little things stick out in my mind and smells and sights can take me back to those times.
Ernest (senior) was quite high up in the Council and I think Emma also worked for the council, on the Board of Governors (?). Also I believe my Grandfather was involved in the aftermath of the floods of 1953.
My father Tim worked for Rusts of Suffield Park, Cromer (a grocers shop) after he came out of the RAF.
I had an Aunt and Uncle and cousins living in Cromer before I moved to Chester on my parents divorce. Unfortunately I never heard from them again until seeing this website where I found I had a cousin called Phillip.

RE: RE: MY MEMORIES OF CROMER
Maybe we should meet in Cromer next time you are over - your wife, Mike and I. We could meet outside the church or in Central Road. How weird is that?
I have always been sad that I had such a small family, my cousin Bob and my Auntie Muriel and now I have a big family ha ha. Obviously they don't know me and I do not want to encroach on anyone's lives but am glad that I have now contacted you.

RE: RE: MY MEMORIES OF CROMER
Indeed you do have a cousin called Philip, that's me. Paul, Gerry, Shelley and David are also your cousins. My mother (Mary) and father (Bernard) lived and worked in Cromer until 1959 where we moved to Harlow in Essex. My dad worked on the railway there as a signalman. I was quite shocked when I read you article as my memory of "Cromer" is exactly as you descibed it! I can still smell the old wooden sleepers around number 7 Central Road. Although I now live in Spain whenever I am back to Harlow I always make a trip back to Cromer for my "crab salad" and to look up my/our grandparents' house. My dad died back in 1985. He suffered with his heart, thankfully he died at peace whilst asleep. He was just 51! Mum is still going strong, now 79. I myself have suffered with my heart, started at 42 with unstable Angina but back in 2009 I had 4 heart attacks one hour before one of my twin daughter's wedding! ...Missed that one. I am now 55 and have 5 kids and adopted 2 by marriage. My kids are 29, 25, 25, 22, 21, 15,and 15. I remember our old house in Cromer, 32 Lynewood Road, it's still there, I saw it about 3 years ago. The last time I saw Uncle Tim was at Grandad's funeral back in 1977 or 78?. Well, I hope you get this message and are able to contact me? Maybe on Face book? I go by the name Phil Bartram. Cheers for now.
