Sited on a Bronze Age tumulus, the Beacon was built in Elizabethan times and was used at the time of the Armada to warn of the Spanish threat. The extra bricks and the conical top were improvements added by Sir John Stanley in the late 18th century. Unfortunately, the Beacon fell down during as storm in the 1930s, and was replaced by a simple memorial plaque.
