Croston Towers

A Memory of Alderley Edge.

I have long sought information about one of the great Victorian villas of Alderley Edge, the house named Croston Towers in the centre of the large plot bounded by Woodbrook Road, Tempest Road and Macclesfield Road. My earlier article named 'Life on the Edge' gives some of the background to my search.

And at long last I have some really useful information. I have been sent an image of a very early watercolour of the house, painted about 1830 or thereabouts. The painter has not signed his work but there is a plaque stating that the house was the seat of Edward Westhead who I have found died in 1844.

The house is easy to recognise from aerial photographs of the area taken in 1946, just before the house was demolished, so I am sure the watercolour is of the correct house. The problem is that on this website there does not seem to be any way that I can share the image.

Hello Jill Moss - very many thanks for your note. Do you have any idea of when that fire might have occurred at Croston Towers ?? And do I know you from my time in the village ?? Kind regards Graham Dilliway
I hhave contacted you before Graham but you didn't remember me. I attended Macclesfield High School for Girls. I was born and grew up at a cottage in Artists' Lane but my famiy moved to Alderley Edge. I definitely once walked with you to Clockhouse Farm at Mottram St Andrew to buy eggs. I would often see you around riding your bike as I spent a lot of time on mine and on my pony.
Oh yes I might !! Did we not once visit an egg farm and you pencilled the 'F' word on an egg which was sent to a customer who then complained and you got into trouble ????? Jill Sh--- ??
Sorry not me. The lady who sold eggs was a friend of my Mum so I wouldn't do anything like that. Incidentally I remember Mum telling me of an incident at Norburys farm opposite Eddie Walker's. Many years earlier the man had shot his young daughter as he found out she was expecting a baby but she managed to crawl to Eddi Walker's farm for help.
Hello Graham,
I would be very interested in seeing the picture of Croston Towers. My Great Great Uncle used to live there and I would love to show the picture to my grandmother to see if she remembers it when she used to visit her family there.
Thanks,
Nick
