Memories of Aldershot


I learnt to swim at the "command baths" in Aldershot in the 1960s. It was a very old building and very cold. I hated the lessons as the instructors used to have a long stick to push you back into centre of the pool. I now know why I hate swimming!

It was 1952 and the NAAFI Club held dancing lessons. Now, trying to learn to dance in hobnailed Army boots was impossible, but I did chat up a NAAFI girl and arranged to meet her after her work, which I did. I was born in Aldershot in June 1946. I believe the event was at the General Hospital at the top end of St.Georges Road.
