The freehold of the Butts was presented to the town by the Lord of the Manor is 1981. The area is used for the two annual fairs, circuses, and Old-Fashioned Cricket Match and as an open space for all to enjoy. The earliest reference to cricket being played here found so far is for 1780. The houses behind are late Victorian.
