The New Nhs

A Memory of Alton.

Straight from school at 17 and a half, I started training at Treloars in 1948.
The Managers had managed the transfer to the NHS very efficiently! As Lord Burnham was Chairman of the Board [and also of the Daily Telegraph! ] we we well provided for. I remember that we had a free taxi from the railway station if returning from a day off after dark!
The picture shows the Nurses Home. We were under strict discipline, and accepted it as the norm. I have learnt a lot since then!
We were checked in at breakfast at 7.00a.m. by the Night Sister. We went on the wards to give the children their breakfast, . On my "Babies" ward [Block 2] we had to feed several children as their splintage disabled their movement.
We then had to sweep the ward, and do the cleaning later allocated to Domestic staff, after my time.
At 10.00am, I think, we went to the Nursing school for our theoretical Preliminary Training School months. PTS replaced the older system of Probationer Nurses. We were asked to "sign on" for 2 years after the Tutors had passed us as fit to do so ! As we were not "of age" till 21 in those days, this "Signing on" was not really legally binding.
It was a strict training, but we enjoyed ourselves !
