Memories Of St Michaels School Sunninghill

I was at sunninghill school 1959 to 1963, I lived in Bouldish farm south ascot at the time having moved from the Nissan huts in cheapside.

We also had race week off school which was great and I remember helping out at the back of the chipshop. They had a large potato pealer that dropped all the pealed potatoes into an old bath.
I also remember walking to the church and being told off by the vicar for climbing the ladder to the bell tower.

I was at Sunninghill school from 1958 to 1963. remember when Miss Pope used to test the class in their times tables by bouncing the tennis ball and shouting out our name and for example 7 x 6, and you had to shout back the answer by the time she caught the ball. We always used to play “Jacks” or 5 stones on the flat drain covers. We played rounders in the playground and we all tried to hit the ball over the cinema. I remember dear old Miss Stokely, and of course old Payne’s the sweet shop half way up the high street where you could spend your bus money.

I too was at Sunninghill School from 1959 to 1965 and remember Miss Stokely in Infants school, the old canteen, which my Mother also remembered from when she was a pupil there. Miss Stokely also taught my Mother as well. Then in order of succession, Junior school comprised of Mrs. Pitt, Miss Pope, Mr. Singleton and Mr. Best before moving onto Charters County Secondary Modern as was, in September 1965 until I left in July 1970. Fifty years ago last year! I too moved to Carroll Crescent in South Ascot from the Nissan Huts in Cheapside And later as a teenager, to KIngswick Drive in Sunninghill. I remember the week off for Royal Ascot & use to 'man' a table on Ascot Station selling the Racing Papers to racegoers as they disembarked from all the specials that ran in those days. There was a W H Smith kiosk on Platform One where I use to do a weekend paper run around Cheapside. The kiosk was run by one of my class mates at Charters Dad, Mr. Hook. At Sunninghill Juniors, we use to walk to St. Michaels and All Angels on Ascension Day and after the service we got the rest of the day off!

I was at Sunninghill school , 1956 to 1962 and then on to Charters School. My name is Royston Nutley...at raemepham7@gmail. I welcome banter. Mr Singleton he made me a millionaire to day. He had arrange a Rugby match with Windsor Grammar School at Sunninghill Rec on a Saturday. From that day I played for Charters , Bracknell , and Harlequins in London . From there I played for Surrey......Now Mr Steel H.A.T.E.D Boys.......He was sacked for pass- in 11+PLUS exam answers to Girls . I can remember my Mum telling me the story in the Bracknell News and mail , I still have the clip......That was the thing that drove me to do well. I retired at 55 years .....THANK-YOU Mr Singleton.
