More about this scene
This interesting house was built on the north bank of the Ure in 1459 for the Metcalfes, an influential Wensleydale family. Thomas Metcalfe was Privy Councillor to the Duchy of Lancaster. The house contains a minstrels' gallery and a private chapel. In 1637 an L-shaped addition was made to the south-east corner. The last Thomas Metcalfe was involved in the South Sea Bubble, and on his death the house passed out of the family. It is still inhabited, but not open to the public.
