More about this scene
Balsham was the site of a bloody battle in 1010. Local legend says that the only survivor of the massacre hid in the tower of the parish church of Holy Trinity. The present tower, dating from the 13th century, was possibly built by Hugh de Balsham, the Bishop of Ely from 1257-86 and the founder of Peterhouse. The clunch (made of hard chalky material) tower is currently under repair.
