More about this scene
Our tour starts south of the River Ouse in the area developed by King Edward the Elder in AD919; it was defended by the King's Ditch, some of which still remains after all these centuries. The foreground buildings were demolished to make a large roundabout roughly where the photographer's camera is located. The church tower on the right is St John's, originally the chapel to St John's Hospital, whose 13th-century core survives nearby. In the 17th century it became the rectory, St John's House, where John Bunyan 'sought spiritual help' from John Gifford, the vicar, in the 1650s.
