More about this scene
A bracing north-easterly catches flags and furls the lugsails of three packed boats entering harbour. Although apparently safe, the inner of the three sailing craft could well find herself on a collision course, unless due caution is exercised. The paddle tug 'Frenchman' continues her passenger trade. Seven years after this photograph was taken, she was integrated into the United Towing Company of Hull, later to become the most powerful towing fleet in the United Kingdom. Around 1930, she was employed at Staithes, as a coal hulk, and she was eventually scrapped in New Holland as late as 1963.
