Buntingford, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
The street follows the course of the Roman road Ermine Street, and is typically without any sign of a bend. On the left, the white timber-framed, jettied building was the Bell Inn, which closed around 1880; it is now a gift shop. It is said that Queen Elizabeth I stayed at the Bell on a journey north. Contemporary with her visit are a number of unique wall paintings. Behind the Bell were extensive barns for stabling and accommodation for blacksmiths and grooms.
