The dawning of the railway age helped in no small way to put Burgess Hill on the map, and the Railway Hotel can be seen on the right in this picture. A branch of Barclays Bank lies further down the street on the corner. The most notable change to have occured since this photograph was taken is the removal of the large chimney on Barclays Bank.

Anyone familiar with Burgess Hill (I lived there from 1956 until 2012) will know that this photo is incorrectly titled. London Road is some way off to the south - turn left at distant St John's church spire. We are of course looking from Station Hill (which is the bridge over the railway line) down towards the junction of Church Road and Station Road which branches off to the left.
