More about this scene
Three years after William Cobbett rode through this stretch of countryside in August 1823, the Dale family came to Aldhurst Farm. Seven generations later, they are still in residence in the 15th-century farmhouse on the right. The majestic elms in the background were lost in the 1930s, and the barn on the left was removed in 1987, while the hovel in between was painstakingly removed and re-erected in its entirety in Leigh. The labourer standing with his two patient charges at the farm entrance was Tom Tugwell, who was employed by the Dales when this charming photograph was taken.
