In the early 1720s Bishop Wilson was held prisoner in Castle Rushen for nine weeks for failing to pay a fine. In 1722 an ecclesiastical court found a certain Lady Horne guilty of slander. Lady Horne happened to be the wife of the Governor, who was none too pleased. The Governor declared that ecclesiastical courts were acting illegally and that they must drop all such cases. The Bishop and his vicars-general refused and finished up in jail themselves.
