More about this scene
Catterick has three greens; this one looks along Sour Beck to the 15th-century parish church of St Anne, financed by the owners of nearby Brough Hall. Also in the picture are (left to right) Chandler's House; the 1912 Methodist church; the Bay Horse Inn; and below the parish church, Stepping Stones House. In 1816, a Dr Scott attended the death of Lord Nelson and fourteen years later became the Vicar of Catterick. In 1911 Lord Baden-Powell recommended the former site of the Roman camp, Cataractonium, to be a major military camp - it still dominates the town.
