More about this scene

Looking east back downhill from the junction with Bowstridge Lane, the gable on the right is the remnant of a cottage demolished to improve visibility from the lane. The shop with the Daren Bread sign is still a baker's, Stratton Bakery, and A Warner beyond is still a butcher's. The buttressed wall on the left belongs to the former rectory, a good brick house of about 1700 with seven bays of sash windows.

Growing Up In Chalfont
We lived in Chalfont until 1961 when we moved to Leigh-on-sea. I lived up the footpath in a bungalow at the side of the garage, opposite The Pheasant pub. I remember putting pennies around the green, and shopping in Paynes shop, where they had a barbers in the back and Paynes paper shop. Pennies Around The Green
I also remember placing a penny on the edge of the green. I went to the infant/junior school and I'm sure there was a teacher called Mrs Jelly. I remember a teacher getting married and my grandmother (we lived with her in the Laggar before it was tarmacked) sending a jar of homemade jam in with me as a wedding present. Pennies Round The Green
We lived in Back Lane probably from 1954 to 1958. I went to the local village school where Mrs Larter taught me italic writing (still commented on to this day) and Mr George was the headmaster. My elder sister was in Mr Stacey's class. When we walked home from school we walked past Milton's cottage up to Three Households. I am trying to get some info on Chalfont and wonder if anyone can help me with some 'memories'. I am 64 now and having recently returned to the UK after many years in the USA, and I am trying to find out about my past. I am not familiar with the Chalfonts, however my family (one side) were from Chalfont in the 1940s and I am therefore one of the Chalfont/Amersham 'Bartletts' - it seems there were a few. ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
