Place Farm 1904 Further east, the photographer looks eastward along Charlwood Lane, with the lane towards Ifield on the right. This area is now developed with modern housing on the left, but in 1904 he had a clear view of the 1860s Endowed School. To the right is Charlwood Place Farm with its tile-hung upper floor and farm buildings to the right. Less than a mile to the right is the end of Gatwick Airport's runway: Charlwood is not as peaceful now as in 1904, to put it mildly. Francis Frith's Sussex A Century Ago
