The building to the extreme left, with the bicycle against its balusters, was the public library until the late 1980s. Broomfield Road corner was already a problem, with its 'No Right Turn' signs and people wary of crossing the road. The snub-nosed vehicle on the right is a Scammell lorry - used extensively by British Rail.

This photo was probably taken soon after the newly built Civic Suite was officially opened for use as public offices. The town's population was expanding rapidly as the local big industries attracted more and more workers from far and wide.
