More about this scene
The flamboyant thatch of a former infants' school was turned into a cottage orne by Matthew Knight in 1881; at the turn of the century it was the home of the local headmaster, John Charles Bucknall. It stands on the east side of Duck Street at its junction with Mill Lane. Renovations in the 1990s revealed a 'witch bottle' containing liquid that was probably urine concealed inside the chimney. This was a common country tradition aimed at averting the evil eye.
