Chipping Norton, The Rollright Stones, The King's Men c.1960

More about this scene
The integrity of the Rollright stones, which stand near the A34 in Oxfordshire, cannot be verified. There are today 77 stones that make up the circle, yet in the 17th century a drawing by John Aubrey shows only 25 standing stones. Time and man have ravaged the limestone uprights. They are not all original; some are the broken tops of stones, others have been wrongly re-sited. The stones evoke mystery and abound with folklore that even the famous Sir Arthur Evans (who excavated Knossos, Crete) recounts in some detail; unfortunately, space does not permit it to be included here.
