Chipping Norton, The Rollright Stones, The King Stone c.1960

More about this scene
Next to the circle is the railed King Stone, badly deformed by weather and people. The railings do little to enhance its setting. It was considered a magical stone where barren women would press their breast against the stone in hope of a child! Local people used to meet at the stones once a year for merrymaking, and in Tudor times there are reports of witches using the circle as a meeting place.
