More about this scene
The Scarborough to Whitby railway brought many discerning visitors to this village in the 19th century. Many were seduced by the charms of Cloughton Wyke on the coast and decided to live here. Little has changed in this picture over the years – the farm cottage on the left and the Manor House, far right, remain, but the grocer's shop succumbed to supermarket competition and is now a private house. The local sandstone quarry provided material to build Scarborough Castle.
