Early Memories Of John Burt.

A Memory of Corby.

I so remember Rockingham Road Shops and "early" Corby.

I lived in Derbyshire but we often visited Gran who lived at Faraday Grove. Aged just 5 I was sent to Corby (1949) for a month whilst my sister was born. I went to the school further up towards Occupation Road and next to the methodist Church.

Further down towards the village (as it was then) there was the Post Office pockmarked with bullets. Opposite was a tiny shop and a pekingese dog always sat on the counter. I remember it well.

Gran's neighbour, Tom Goode, was caretaker at the secondary school and was also in the Fire Brigade. He made me the fire brigade mascot and he and his wife, Flo, used to take me out on day trips in his little old van.

As I grew and became a teenager Corby sadly also grew but I do remember visiting Tipaldis with my cousins when I visited. On the corner there was also a small "gift" shop as I recall. Bought Gran a tiny present there when I was 8. I actually still have it - a white and green plastic windmilI would you believe. Gran always kept the horrible thing on display,

I always loved visiting Corby.

The last time I was there was about 5 years ago for the funeral of an aunt. Sadly my own time is now limited and it is doubtful that I'll visit again and I live in the far North now - Scottish borders.
I am though grateful for the photos on this blog. They so represent what I remember and loved, Thank you.
