More about this scene

This beautiful village is situated on the Sussex border on a headstream of the Medway river. The village contains a number of fine weatherboarded houses and a school with Tudor timbering. Note that on the left-hand side of the road the old trees are now obliged to sink their roots in tarmac. The village seems so much at peace that it is hard to believe there was once a thriving iron foundry close by at Furnace Mill.

Gainsford House
I lived in Saxbys Garden Cottage in 1963 and worked in what was then called Gordon House - a Care Home. My friend Jo and I were there for 6 months only. It was while I was working there that I found out Gordon House was once called Gainsford House and when I last drove to the village I saw it is once again holding its rightful name. I Lived In Cowden When I Was A Kid I Lived With My Mum, Dad , And 4 Brothers We Lived On The End House With The Large Garden Next To The Lane And The School Was On The Other Side Of The Lane Our Surname Was Paige

I remember once at school bird watching out the window in a small darken room. I also remember playing on the swings with andrews girls from up the road opposite the pub im sure it was in the 1970s but have no photos as my parents did not take photos.

Cowden Caravan Memories
We (Nelson family) spent our summer in the 50s in a caravan on a site within walking distance to the beach and water. I have fond memories of that beach and ocean including shrimping with our big nets we pushed along the edge of the water. We brought up the buckets of shrimp to be boiled and eaten... I remember the men putting the deep sea rods in the water but don't remember catching too many fish :)- ...see more

Church Street
Generations of my family lived in Cowden, going right back to 1700s. My parents were married in the church, which lies behind the wall you can just see at the front of this photo. I was also baptised here in 1958. The main significance of this photo for me, are the two houses connected to the Old Smithy (facing left towards the church). My grandmother, Winnie Card, and her three little sisters were born in Church ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
