Gainsford House
A Memory of Cowden.
I lived in Saxbys Garden Cottage in 1963 and worked in what was then called Gordon House - a Care Home. My friend Jo and I were there for 6 months only. It was while I was working there that I found out Gordon House was once called Gainsford House and when I last drove to the village I saw it is once again holding its rightful name. That means a lot to me as my mother was Frances Gainsford, born in New Zealand of English parents. I am now 77 and would dearly love to visit Cowden again, also Crowhurst. My time in Cowden has left me with wonderful memories of working there, of enjoying time in The Crown and of walking to and from Saxbys - collecting our eggs from the farmer. Jo and I were walking past his gate the day John Kennedy was killed and I clearly recall the farmer coming out of his gate on his tractor and telling us the sad news. I now live in Queensland, Australia.
