Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

Please Note: Our offices and factory are now closed until Monday 5th January when we will be pleased to deal with any queries that have arisen during the holiday period.

The Book Club Crowborough

A Memory of Crowborough.

I remember going into the Book Club while waiting for the bus to go down Crowborough Hill. We occasionally missed the bus if we got too engrossed in a book. We used to get off the bus from Tunbridge Wells and then take another bus that went to Jarvis Brook. We used to get off at the end of Green Lane because we lived near Poundfield Post Office. I remember when the Book Club moved to other premises and the site was redeveloped. That would have been in the 1960s. I can remember Mr Back who worked in the Book Club. I think he later went to work in a bookshop called Goulden and Curries in Tunbridge Wells.

I was born in Crowborough in 1949 and the first three years of my life were spent in the flat above The Book Club, where my parents then worked. On the opposite side of the road was a flat occupied by a Miss Taverner to whom (as a three year old) I sometimes waved in the evening. Does anyone know anything about her? In 1952 my father obtained a job with the Ordnance Survey so we moved to Epsom, but over the next few years we used to visit Crowborough quite often and I remember Elise Santoro (and Molly Frampton) quite well.

I came to Crowborough in `948/49 to live in an orphanage with my brother for couple of years whilst mum was in sanitarium , of course didn't want to be there but with hindsight I learned a lot of life's lessons, including ringing the bells at church. on Sundays we went for a walk somewhere there was a lot of high bracken to make tunnels in where we met a local boy with a pet Jackdaw. my brother hated it and often ran away he was 6 or 7 so quite a worry for everyone. I remember Shirley and Freda and a small boy called Monty. I was 8 and my first job was always to get a baby called John up and dressed. and last home from church had everyone's shoes to clean.
